STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES

ALL USERS MUST ABIDE BY THE FOLLOWING RULES AND
REGULATIONS.
NO EXCEPTIONS ARE ALLOWED.
- All experimentation and housing
involving zebrafish should be conducted ethically and comply with
safety regulations of the facility.
- For all technical and material
assistance, please contact the facility in charge:
- Technical assistance includes
- Technical expertise to house and maintain fish colonies in tanks
- Setting up breeding tanks to procure embryos
- Manipulation in the embryos:microinjection etc
- Handling juveniles/ adults: dissection etc

REQUEST FOR EMBRYOS
- User must include the following details: strain of zebrafish required, number and developmental stage
of embryos required, the aim / purpose of the experiment and project
details (CCMB funds, extramural funds etc)

REQUEST FOR JUVENILE/ ADULT ZEBRAFISH
- User can email to facility in charge (Dr. Ravinder/ Arvinda Swamy) to request for
- juvenile atleast 1 month in advance
- adults atleast 3 months in advance
- User must include the following details: strain of zebrafish required, number the aim / purpose/
duration of the experiment
- The used juveniles/ adults will not be returned to the facility after use / end of experiment. The user is
solely responsible to dispose the fish in the ethical, biohazard free
and hygienic manner.

REQUEST FOR BRINGING FISH FROM OTHER LABS/ SOURCES
-
User must use email to facility in charge (Dr. Ravinder/ Arvinda Swamy) to inform the arrival of fish from
other research institutes/ labs/ companies/ vendors or any other
sources atleast a week in advance
- All the fish / animals procured from other sources mentioned above will be subjected to quarantine for a
period of minimum 1 month
- The facility managers will decide upon the health of the imported fish and designate the quarantine time
- In case the fish are not found to be healthy/ harboring infections, user will be informed and the fishes
will be removed from the facility
- The facility managers will allot designated space to each of the newly arrived fish colonies as per the
space available in the facility

REQUEST FOR TERMINATION OF A SPECIFIC STOCK/TRANSGENIC LINES
-
The user must inform the facility managers atleast 2 weeks in advance for the termination of the stock /
transgenic line
- The user is solely responsible to dispose the fish in the ethical, biohazard free and hygienic manner
under the guidance of the fish facility managers

LABELLING THE PERSONAL STOCKS/TRANSGENIC LINES:
- User must label each tank with the following information -
- a)Name of strain
- b)Date of birth (DOB)
- c)Name of the user / Group Head/Institute
- d)No. of animals / tank
- e)Name of the strain/ transgenic line
- Any default / error in the labeling of tanks will lead to discontinuation of using the facility.

FOR USE OF OTHER TECHNICAL RESOURCES:MICROINJECTION, DISSECTION AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY PROTOCOLS USING
ZEBRAFISH
- Users must receive training by the
facility in charge for microinjection, dissection and molecular biology
protocols before using independently. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE ALLOWED.
Users without training will not be permitted to use these technical
resources at the facility.
- Training will be provided according to the experimental need of the user.
- Users from other academic organizations / industry / companies will be charged fee to use the
facility according to their usage and requirement.
- Specific consumables to the experiments conducted and usage of the facility will be provided to
each user. Eg – fish feed, tanks, nets, microinjection needles etc.
